  • ARI VERSLUIS

Redefining realness in the context of social identity and fashion is the foundation of all the work of Ari Versluis.
Either with the challenges of commissioned work, the framework of Exactitudes or in the form of staged documentary photography; the culture that each of us create to define ourselves is always examined.
In various motivated studio interventions, individuals, duo’s or groups are depicted who use apparel as a language and as a communication-tool.
It all starts with observation and reflecting on their expression in the outer confidence, leading to an active encounter and an invitation to step into the frame.
Pushing the boundaries between social and artistic experiment, the images translate into personal stories between the portrayed and the photographer.

    EXACTITUDES

In the long running and highly acclaimed art project of Exactitudes the focus is on investigating the way cultures, subcultures and social types produce, stabilise and disseminate meaning in the social arena. Inspired by a shared interest in striking dress code of various social groups, Ari Versluis teamed up with profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek. Together they have been systematically hamstringing such permutations of received identity at intervals for the last 23 years. By registering their subjects in an identical framework, with similar poses and a strictly observed dress codes the Exactitudes series provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people’s attempt to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. Exactitudes was the inspiration for the AW17 collection of VETEMENTS.
